The Cybersecurity Gap Most Businesses Don't Know They Have
Most cybersecurity conversations still centre on the intrusion: the phishing email, the ransomware payload, the breach notification. Those are real risks, and worth guarding against. But the more consequential gap for a lot of organizations isn't the attack they're bracing for — it's the slower erosion happening underneath systems everyone already trusts: data that's quietly drifted from accurate, vendor access nobody's re-reviewed since onboarding, and AI tools employees adopted faster than anyone approved them.
A few patterns worth naming specifically:
- Governance lags adoption. Procurement can approve a new SaaS or AI tool in a week. Security review of what that tool touches, stores, or trains on can take a quarter. That gap is where sensitive data moves fastest.
- Traceability beats tooling. More monitoring dashboards don't fix a system nobody can trace back to its source. The organizations that catch problems early are the ones that can answer, on demand, where a record came from and who's touched it since.
- Quiet drift outpaces sudden failure. The costliest data problems rarely start with a dramatic breach. They start with a small, unflagged gap between what a system reports and what's actually true — one that compounds every day nobody's checking for it, until a decision gets made on it that's expensive to unwind.
